Laurent Solomon Juneau, fur trader and founder of the city of Milwaukee, was born in 1793 in Montreal. In 1821 he settled in Milwaukee where he engaged in the fur trade. Juneau also became first postmaster and mayor of Milwaukee. He later died in poverty and debt while attending meeting to settle Indian payments in 1856. Increase Allen Lapham (1811-1875), scientist and scholar of Milwaukee, Wis., was a keen observer and prolific recorder of geographical, topographical, botanical, climactic, and other physical aspects of the state of Wisconsin. He served as President of the State Historical Society and State Geologist and was influential in urging the establishment of a weather bureau in 1869.
